Having worked in advertising and marketing for the last decade, I instinctively ask myself one question when telling a story or creating a campaign – ‘so what’? If I can answer that question in a compelling way, then I plough on in good faith.
The ‘so what‘ is sometimes referred to as the ‘what’s in it for me’ – but I don’t think that gives people enough credit. We aren’t motivated purely by selfish reasons, it’s just that with everything else going on in our lives – we tend to filter excess noise and need someone to make the connection as to why one thing deserves our time over another.
Whatever you want to call it, I wasn’t going to be able to produce a blog without offering up my ‘So What‘. So here it is…
Humans instinctively want to pitch in for the good of the tribe. My 2 year old just can’t stop himself- his ‘help’ often turns up mixed results (bless him) but the primal need to contribute is undisputedly built-in. As we get older however, the scale of the problems facing us start to seem insurmountable, as do the obstacles stopping us from pitching in- no time, no money… even less energy. So we make a donation here and there (if we can) and pass the baton to the ‘crusaders’ – those amazing people who seem to have tireless energy, faith and positivity.
For those of us who want to contribute but aren’t natural crusaders… inspiredbyhumans is the start of a rational revolution. A place to be inspired by positive change and motivated people- both crusaders and your average Joe (or Joanne)- who have made a difference to the world we live in.
So much of our news coverage is alarmist, that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and powerless. My goal is to highlight important issues (sustainability, poverty, health, education, violence) and show that there is a rational way to approach these issues and make a difference with the time, money and energy we have to spare. Once we get past the ‘So What’ gatekeeper -everybody has a role to play in positive change, even if it’s just spreading the word and inspiring others.
And so it begins…
